Partnerships
Influencer and creator partnerships
Every Sri Lankan hotel gets daily requests for free stays. Almost all of them are worth declining. A small number of creators genuinely move bookings, and the difference is measurable before you host anyone.
How we run it
- Audience checks: real followers, right countries, real engagement
- Written deliverables and usage rights before the stay is confirmed
- Preference for mid-tier creators in your actual source markets
- Tracked links and codes so you can see what a stay returned
- A polite standard reply for the requests you should decline
How to tell a worthwhile creator from a free holiday
Almost every Sri Lankan hotel with a decent Instagram presence receives collaboration requests weekly, and the overwhelming majority are not worth accepting. The difference between the few that are and the many that are not is visible before you reply, if you know what to look at.
Follower count is the least useful signal. What matters first is where the audience is. A creator with 200,000 followers who are mostly in markets that do not travel to Sri Lanka is worth less to you than a creator with 15,000 followers concentrated in the UK, Germany, Australia or India. Ask for the audience-location breakdown from their analytics — a genuine creator will send it without hesitation, and a reluctance to share it is itself an answer.
The second signal is engagement quality rather than rate. Look at whether comments are real conversations or generic emoji, whether saves and shares are proportionate to views, and whether previous hotel collaborations generated visible interest — people asking where it is, what it costs, whether it is worth it. A creator whose travel posts generate questions is a creator whose audience acts.
The third is content fit. A creator whose feed is luxury poolside content will not sell a rustic eco-lodge convincingly, and the reverse is equally true. The audience notices when a partnership is off-brand, and so does the algorithm.
Structuring the agreement before anyone checks in
- Named deliverables: how many reels, how many posts, how many stories, and by when
- Usage rights in writing, so you can run the content as a paid ad afterwards
- Whether the stay covers meals, activities and transfers, stated explicitly
- A tracked link or discount code so the outcome is measurable
- Approval of the property's name, tagging and any factual claims before posting
- What happens if deliverables are not met — usually payment or partial charge for the stay
Measuring what a creator stay actually returned
The reason influencer marketing has a poor reputation among hoteliers is that most collaborations are never measured, so the cost is real and the return is a feeling. That is fixable with very little effort.
Give each creator a tracked link and a code that is unique to them, and check three things afterwards: direct bookings or enquiries attributed to that link or code, the movement in your own follower count and profile visits during and just after the collaboration, and the performance of the content when you run it as a paid ad. That last one is often where the real value sits — a creator's authentic footage frequently outperforms a hotel's own polished material as ad creative, and usage rights make that possible.
It is also worth recording the ones that returned nothing. After three or four collaborations you will have a clear internal picture of which creator profile works for your property, which makes the next decision faster and cheaper.
The requests you should decline
Most of them. A polite, consistent standard reply — thanking them, explaining that collaborations are planned in advance against defined objectives, and inviting them to send audience data if they would like to be considered — saves your team hours and costs you nothing. Properties that say yes to everything end up hosting a stream of guests who post once, tag inconsistently, and produce no measurable interest at all.
Common questions
Is influencer marketing worth it for a Sri Lankan hotel?
It can be, but only with vetting and structure. A small number of creators with genuine audiences in your source markets, working to written deliverables and tracked links, produce measurable interest and reusable content. Accepting open-ended free-stay requests without deliverables or measurement generally does not.
How many followers should a creator have before we host them?
Follower count is the weakest signal. A mid-tier creator with a highly engaged audience concentrated in the countries your guests come from is usually worth more than a much larger account with a scattered or inactive following. Ask for the audience-location breakdown before deciding.
Should we pay creators or is a free stay enough?
It varies. Some established creators charge a fee alongside the stay; others will work for the stay plus usage rights. What matters more than which model you choose is that deliverables, timing and usage rights are agreed in writing before arrival.
Can we use creator content in our own advertising?
Only if the usage rights are agreed in advance and in writing. It is worth insisting on, because authentic creator footage often performs better as paid social creative than a hotel's own produced material.
How do we handle the constant free-stay requests?
With a standard polite reply that explains collaborations are planned in advance against objectives, and invites them to send audience data if they want to be considered. It filters the serious few from the many and stops your team spending hours on individual replies.
