Sri Lanka hotel marketing in 2026

Our read on what is changing for independent properties this year, and what we would prioritise if we ran your hotel. Observations and judgement, not survey data — we will say so wherever a number is an estimate.

Five shifts

What we think matters this year

  1. 01

Trip planning starts inside an AI assistant

A growing share of travellers ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity where to stay before they open a search engine. Properties with clean, factual, well-structured pages get named. Properties with marketing prose and no structured data do not.

  2. 02

    Discovery has moved to video

Short-form video now decides the shortlist for hill country and coastal properties. A filming day and a posting habit beat a brochure website for first-time visibility.

  3. 03

OTA commission is under real pressure

More owners are treating platforms as a paid acquisition channel with a measurable cost rather than free distribution. That reframing is where direct booking programmes start.

  4. 04

Domestic demand is a genuine second market

Colombo weekend travel and long-weekend demand can carry a property through months where international arrivals dip. Most hotels still market only in English.

  5. 05

    Speed is a booking factor

Guests research on mobile data in transit. A site that takes five seconds loses bookings before anyone sees a room.

Fix the booking path, get named by the assistants, and stop paying commission on guests who already knew you. In that order.

How to use this

None of this requires a large budget. The technical and local search work behind being found by AI assistants is largely the same work that improves classic search rankings, and it is a one-off effort with an ongoing payoff.
